Elegance with Function
One of my favourite parts about being a studio furniture maker is engaging the client to create a functional piece of art. I love the whole process, creating proportional design to bring sophistication and elegance to the piece.
I've always believed that art and function go hand in hand.
Early in my career I started out as a stucco plaster in Victoria, working with a master of the trade I spent the better part of a decade doing cove and cornice work in heritage homes and making ordinary spaces sing with design element.
Since then I started a family, and was lucky enough to work in an industry that afforded me the opportunity to focus on my wood work.
I am the proud father of two extraordinary teenage daughters who sometimes agree to model my pieces for me, I am happily married and a few decades later, I am still chasing my dreams.
Being a maker is something I have always done, and it would be my absolute pleasure to work with you.
Custom furniture starts with a conversation.
Functional Art
Marquetry closet doors each measure 4.5' wide 8' tall. The local three sisters mountains from my front deck. Shop sawn 1/16" veneer Vertical Grain Douglas Fir, Sapele, Quilted Maple. Hand carved door Sapele door pulls. Hung on coplanar door hardware.
Thoughtful Design
An outdoor kitchen designed around a Kamado Joe. My client was not satisfied with the mobile base that came with his Kamado Joe so we discussed what it was he wanted and came up with a design that is mobile, functional and just plain gorgeous.
Wave Table
I've said a few times, curves are my signature but this time I really went for it.
I wanted to create a wave effect with a cantilever top. A piece that would anchor any dining room and lend functional form with beauty.
A hand carved base made of white ash, burnt using a traditional Japanese treatment called, Shou sugi ban.
The top is Black Limba tapered and chamfered to compliment the base.
Liquor Cabinet
This piece was designed for a client who had a tight slightly awkward space between a staircase and wall. This is the perfect application for custom design, transforming a very high traffic area with functional art.
A bustling busy family had been using a tall narrow space as liquor area, but it was messy and distracting.
Working with the client we set some goals of having ample space for both wine and spirts, and once I saw the space I was able to start designing.
The clients were fun and allowed me to explore the design elements I love to incorporate into a project.
It is a concave, bow front, dove tailed cabinet. Haunched mortise and tenon base/wine rack , made from black walnut the cabinet was made from flame cherry, birds eye maple and quilted maple. it was designed for the eye to travel.
This was a super fun project, and more importantly the clients loved it.
Feature Wall
Great rooms often have large landscape walls that are challenging to decorate, and can make for a cold environment. This framed Sapele feature adds warmth and style to a hard to decorate space. Framed panels allow you to show off more than one piece without competition. An easy solution to a common design challenge.
Custom floating cabinetry
My goal with this project was to clean up a messy media station, reclaim an old marble fireplace and add an opportunity to display some art.
I designed a sculpted textured fireplace with convex curves to highlight the lines and warmth of the cabinetry.
The cabinetry is mirrored in the light installation, and the result is a clean media centre with enough storage to hide all of the essentials of any busy family.
Nike Sweden Drafting Table
I've been looking for a Nike Sweden 1956 Drafting table for about ten years, and I couldn't believe my luck when I saw one being used as a garden decoration in a backyard!
I made an offer to the owner, and spent more than a few weeks restoring the seized mechanical parts to get the hydraulics working again.
The table top is Sapele trimmed in aluminium.
This piece anchors my living room and my family uses it daily. Another great example of functional art.
Modern Trestle Dining
This was a commission piece from a professional couple that wanted to marry the old world of the farm house they had just bought with a modern chic design.
This entire piece is Canadian Black Walnut from Quebec, milled and dried in my shop.
Innovative design
It all started with a nest and a little girl named Isabelle. I was commissioned by family who had one goal - how to extend the life of their one-bedroom ski condo to meet the needs of their growing family without going over budget.
Isabelle wanted a nest, the parents wanted everyone to have their own space and ideally stay in a one bedroom unit.
A private staircase, a loft bed with shelves and reading lights for Isabelle. Mom and dad received custom built drawers for smart charging stations, a built in book shelf, floating night stands and privacy reading lights.
Custom design is exactly how you can extend the life of a space that is no longer working.
This was one of my favourite projects to work on.
A Cube in Curves
A Cube in Curves, a whimsical display cases
Curves are my signature design element and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of this project.
Curved frame is Eastern Beech, Cube and shelves are Western Broad Leaf Maple, drawers are white oak.
Never Ordinary
This piece was a commission from a dahlia farmer in Edmonton.
The garden bench was crafted from Western Red Cedar harvested right here in the Kootenays. I picked up the logs from the Logger Days Festival in Kaslo BC and milled them myself.
